There is a lot to like about Puppy Linux. I’m building some diskless obsolete computers that have had their RAM doubled and their disks removed! I am setting up PXE network booting and Clonezilla cloning.
- It can be made to boot into a RAM-disk, and the idea is that when you go to restart or shutdown it prompts you to save your settings, docs, and apps into a persistence file, which is kinda like an overlay SquasgFS. Each boot this is applied to the nascent ramdisk as it boots.
- I’m about to boot from USB this is isane!!
- It is righteously fast! But I really would prefer KDE Plasma so I cn have: Strt button and very nice menu.
- I like how it is opinionated in that its essentially tells you to run as full root, not do multi-user, and it’s on the page about the user spot.
- It appears to have the option to run under X.org which represents true freedom! I have not tried it, perhaps it will fix my shortcuts / icons / and things? Doubtful as it should n;’t
- It can be installed to disk also, but I think the main draw-card is the ram-disk. But that’s why it badly needs a feature to automatically agree to save your persistence data upon restart or shutdown etc. I often randomly rebnot my desktops and it needs to automatically save – number 1 feature request!

Gripes. Keyboard shortcuts. Option to save persistence automatically should exist or be easier to find.
I accidentally rebooted without saving persistence one time because I am odd in that I like to sometimes use the virtual terminals at Alt-F4. Then I begin a very forceful root reboot, but I sorta forgot it did actually try to warn me to save and pres enter but I could not for the life of me press enter inside 60 seconds for some odd reason. Blame this cheap gaming keyboard.

Windows-D should just plain show the desktop ya know?
Windows-E should bring an explorer fillemanager.
Pressing the Windows key should open the pitiful menu at bottom right, or better still, trigger WOFI to open!
After I accidentally dragged all my drive icons off-screen, then hit Arrange by Type, the hit Custom, BOOM all my icons disappeared off-screen again. This “arrange” thing is no use. How about a “Cleanup desktop icons” to pull those ones I put off-screen when I tried dragging all these to the right a bit:

I don;t find it useful in the screenshot app for the mouse to disappear when I try to crop the miage!!
OK starting to get pretty cranky now. Well after I clone this disk a coupe of times (making a computer for my trumpet playing friend Jerome) I am probably going to try to instal KDE Plasdma which will likely bring it to it’s knees…. but then again, who knows? Perhaps it will be totally blazing along with a huge persistent file. Seems cool as.
I agree it is nice to have all the disk partitions showing on the desktop

Then we have someone baking up a homebrew script: Menu, Desktop, EasyJWM configure JWM, Manage JWM keyboard SHORTCUTS, Add New ShortCut, KEY Print , ACTION exec: mtpaint-s Script to capture keys
Someone mentioned FreeCAD or similar: Anyway, big change for me — I’ve spent more than ten years on SketchUp and added many add-ons and worked out many shortcuts to ways of doing things. Time to change that……. etc
